The number one reason for a tummy tuck is pregnancy and massive weight loss patients whose numbers are climbing rapidly. A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin from the lower abdominal wall, and in all cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is flatter and firmer.
A full tummy tuck requires a horizontally-oriented just above or within the upper pubic hairline and this curves toward the hip bones. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary, the desires of the patient and previous abdominal scars. Through this incision, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired with sutures and excess fat and skin is removed. The muscle repair will also define the waistline. A small incision is made around the navel and this is brought out through a small incision after the excess skin is removed. I almost never do a "mini tummy tuck". This involves the same outside incision without an incision around the belly button, but the muscle repair is done from the belly button down to the pubic bone only. Often this leaves a bulge or fullness in the upper abdomen.
I always do liposuction to contour the back, hips, upper buttocks and on many occasions the thighs at the time of the abdominoplasty. It is not enough to just do "a little liposuction" of the flanks. This gives suboptimal results. I've done my share of corrective surgeries on patients treated someplace else for their initial surgery. This is always harder and if the incisions were placed in a more obvious location, it might not be possible to move them.
Your tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight (your pre pregnancy state). The final results may not be fully appreciated due to swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until the initial tissue relaxation in the lower abdomen.
Within a week or two, you should be standing tall and confident about your new slimmer profile.
