Arm Lifts from Bellevue Plastic Surgeons
The ideal patient for an arm lift is a person with excess loose and hanging skin on the back of the arms. This is a rare presentation. Most of the patients I see in my practice are someone who complains that she can't wear a short sleeve shirt or blouse because the sleeve is too tight or is embarrassed to show her arm. After massive weight loss a person can have either presentation with loose skin that continues down the lateral chest wall. Correction of this area is incorporated into my extended arm lift procedure.
The surgical approach is different in these people. If one has loose skin only, than she can have an arm lift. If the person has still a "fat" arm with some loose skin, that person's surgery I will do in two steps to achieve the best surgical outcome. I liposuction the arms first and advise the patient that she will have loose skin, the arms will look worse, but about 4-6 months later I do the arm lift to give her the "skinny" arms she desires. There's nothing more frustrating to the patient and surgeon to have a suboptimal outcome with a long scar to show for it as well. If the surgeon liposuctions the arms during the arm lift procedure, there will be significant swelling that will prohibit the surgeon from removing the amount of skin he or she planned for. Also, if you close the incision under too much tension, you are guaranteed a wide unsightly scar. Most surgeons place the final scar on the medial or inner aspect of the arm. I prefer to place it posterior; this gives a better scar, it is not noticeable with the arms opened or raised.
