Buttock Fat Augmentation
Buttock Augmentation from Bellevue Plastic Surgeons
The posterior area or buttocks did not get much attention until recently in the plastic surgery literature. As we see more and more massive weight loss patients and our treatments must be circumferential to correct the excess loose skin, we began to pay more attention to the aesthetics of the buttock region. The buttock area is a three dimensional structure with height, width and posterior projection and this has to blend in smoothly with the thighs inferiorly and the flanks and back superiorly. As a plastic surgeon, it helps to have an artistic "eye" to create an aesthetically pleasing or "sexy" buttock. To achieve this, it is important to understand the relationship between the muscles, fat distribution and overlying skin cover of the buttocks and how this relationship changes with age, activity and weight fluctuations. Without a doubt, fat plays the most important role in shaping the buttocks. Excess fat in the sacrum (between upper buttock folds), upper buttock, flanks and outer thighs will distort shape and contour and "hide" the true anatomic dimensions of the buttocks.
My first choice for buttock augmentation is always fat. Fat is what defines the shape and feel of the buttocks. Most patients that request buttock augmentation do have excellent donor sites for fat on their abdomen, back, hips or "muffin top", thighs and arms. By removing the fat from these areas will help "sculpt out" the buttocks and further define their anatomic dimensions. Results are excellent and you can expect a 75-80% fat survival. Since fat cannot be stored reliably and maintain its survival outside the body, I do not collect fat from all areas. During a subsequent procedure further fat grafting can be done if so desired by using fat from areas not disturbed the first time.
Best candidates are people with good skin tone and not excessive looseness and have enough fat to auto-donate to give significant aesthetic improvement to the buttock area. The surgery is done as an outpatient procedure in my AAAASF accredited in office surgical facility under intravenous sedation and epidural anesthesia. Postoperatively the patient is instructed to sleep on the stomach for two weeks, relax in the prone position or stand. Should not sit or lie down supine to prevent crushing the freshly transplanted fat. A body garment is worn for 4-6 weeks and the patient may return to work in 2-3 weeks and back to exercise in 4-6 weeks. Final results are evaluated at 3-6 months.
Patients who travel to my clinic for this procedure, from outside the Seattle-Bellevue area, out of state or abroad, must stay in the area for 7-10 days under my close supervision.
