Liposuction is the most common surgical procedure in the United States, matter of fact in the world.

The word liposuction is a generic term meaning to suck out fat. Although this is true even today the surgical procedure evolved since its introduction in to the US in the early 1980’s. Liposuction surgery was done under general anesthesia routinely in the past. The development of the tumescent technique (local anesthesia and a vasoconstrictor) makes it possible to do liposuction with intravenous sedation or without sedation at all.

The latest development on this ever evolving spectrum, first introduced to you in the Northwest by Bellevue Plastic Surgeons is the Tickle lipo. This is an FDA approved technology first used in Europe successfully on thousands of patients, with the ability to remove localized fat deposits under local anesthesia only. No general anesthesia, no IV sedation, no incisions and sutures are required. The Tickle Lipo causes the cannula not only to move back and forth very rapidly, but the tip also rotates. This type of movement “confuses” the nerves and minimal to no pain is experienced by the patient during the procedure. Some patients describe a “tickling sensation”, hence the name.

Dr. Marosan, at Bellevue Plastic Surgeons, has a vast experience with awake body contouring with liposuction. He performed over 300 cases under local tumescent anesthesia only. This new technology allows for even better contouring than with other systems. An advantage Tickle lipo has over laser liposuction such as the Smartlipo or Cool lipo is no heat production which can cause burns or excessive scarring of the underlying tissues including the dermis. Our patients are able to dress themselves with minimal assistance after the surgery, walk to their cars (a responsible adult driver is still required), and resume work or light exercise in 1-3 days.
